CHAPTER 4: GERMAN SHEPHERD BLOODLINES – AMERICAN VS. GERMAN

There is a major split between American and German bloodlines within the German Shepherd Dog breed. American bloodlines are shown in AKC (American Kennel Club) conformation. German line dogs do not generally do well in this venue.

German dogs are bred to the WUSV standard, and American dogs are bred to the GSDCA standard. The two standards are similar with just a few variations, and they are interpreted very differently. Between the two lines, a vastly different German Shepherd Dog is created.

Structure and temperament is an important part of the German Shepherd breed. Correct conformation is what helps to ensure the breed continues to look like a German Shepherd Dog. Structure and temperament also helps to ensure the German Shepherd is built and prepared for the type of work intended.

American Show Lines

American show line German Shepherd dogs are bred differently than most other German Shepherd dogs. They are bred solely for the show ring and not for working ability.

American German Shepherds are bred for what is called the “flying trot.” The flying trot is a side gait that is created by extreme angulations in the hind-quarters. Some people refer to this angulation as a “sloped back.” Extreme angulations are a controversial topic within the German Shepherd Dog world.
